In cooperation with the archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools, EdNavigator created this guide to help New Orleans families learn more about school choice options, tuition assistance, scholarships and more so that families could make informed decisions about which school would be best for their child. EdNavigator believes that all parents should understand every school option available to them and have the information they need to make informed decisions. The Tuition Donation Rebate Program empowers low-income Louisiana families with the financial resources to choose the school that will best prepare their children for college and careers. This program provides rebates to Louisiana state taxpayers that donate to School Tuition Organizations, tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations. School Tuition Organizations use these donations to provide scholarships to students in low-income families. To be eligible for a scholarship, students must have a family income that does not exceed 250% of the federal poverty line and must be entering kindergarten, enrolled in a Louisiana public school, or enrolled in the Louisiana Scholarship Program. Students apply directly to School Tuition Organizations for scholarships. Once they receive a scholarship, students then apply directly to the nonpublic school of their choice for enrollment. School Tuition Organizations determine the amount of the scholarship. The Louisiana Scholarship Program empowers low-income families with the same opportunity as more affluent parents already have – the financial resources to send their child to the school of their choice. Launched in 2008 in New Orleans, the Louisiana Scholarship Program, formally known as the Student Scholarships for Education Excellence Program, was expanded statewide in 2012. For the 2015-2016 school year, more than 12,000 students applied for a Scholarship and nearly 7,200 students accepted a Scholarship and enrolled in a participating, state-approved private school. To be eligible for a Scholarship, students must have a family income that does not exceed 250% of the federal poverty guidelines and must be entering kindergarten or enrolled in a public school with a C, D, or F grade.
